Finland Ordains First Deaf Pastor
Finland’s first-ever deaf pastor was ordained on Sunday at Kuopio’s Lutheran Cathedral. Master of Theology Janne Rissanen will begin work with the Finnish Evangelical Lutheran Mission.
In August, the organisation will send him to Jerusalem, where he will work with the deaf.
The new pastor plans to hold religious services in sign language, visit deaf schools, and perhaps also begin sign language translation work.
Rissanen is the second deaf pastor in the Nordic countries. Johan Selin became the region’s first deaf pastor in Sweden in 2006.
